When the Clock’s Ticking: How a Rush Order Made Me Rethink Laser Engraving (xTool S1 Story)

The Friday Call That Changed Everything

It was 3:47 PM on a Friday in November 2024. I'd just started packing up when the phone rang. A client–let's call him Jake–needed 120 customized gift sets delivered to a trade show by Tuesday morning. The items: laser-engraved wood coasters, engraved leather journals, and etched acrylic keychains, plus 30 cylindrical tumblers with logos. Everything had to match. And he needed it all done on a xTool S1 because that's what his shop had.

My first thought? No way. Normal turnaround for that volume is 5-7 days. We had about 72 hours. But I'd been in this game long enough to know that panic doesn't help. I took a breath and said, "Let me check what's possible. I'll call you back in 15 minutes."

What the xTool S1 Can and Can't Do – Honest Limitations

Based on that weekend (and 40+ rush jobs since), here's what I've learned about the xTool S1's material capabilities:

  • Wood (basswood, plywood, MDF): Excellent. Cuts up to 10mm in multiple passes.
  • Leather (natural, bonded): Good. Requires masking to avoid scorch marks.
  • Acrylic (colored, thin): Works, but inconsistent. Test your specific batch.
  • Metal (painted, anodized aluminum): Engraves well, does not cut metal. Period.
  • Glass & stone: Etches with spray-on marking gel. Not suitable for deep engraving.

My experience is based on about 200 orders with the S1. If you're cutting thick stainless steel or doing production-volume clear acrylic, a fiber or CO₂ laser would be better. But for a small shop that wants versatility without spending $10k+? The xTool S1 with rotary bundle is hard to beat.

The Final Deliver: Lessons Learned

We delivered 118 of 120 pieces by Monday evening – two had to be redone because of a software glitch that cropped up when we rushed the settings. Jake's client was thrilled, and we charged $800 extra in rush fees (base cost was $2,400). The alternative would have been losing a $15,000 annual contract.

That weekend changed how I think about laser engraving equipment. The xTool S1 has real limitations, but if you plan for them, it can handle 80% of what a small business needs. The other 20%? Know when to outsource or upgrade.

Oh, and I should add: we now include a 48-hour buffer in every rush quote because of what happened in November 2024. That saved us twice last quarter alone.

As of January 2025, the xTool S1 is still my go-to for rapid prototyping and short-run custom jobs. Just don't expect it to cut 1/4" clear acrylic or thick metal – and you'll be fine.
