- Air assist: built into the S1 design, so there is no separate air pump to mount.
- Rotary support: it works with the RA2 Pro rotary — plan for that if you engrave tumblers.
- Software: xTool Creative Space is free. LightBurn is supported, but it is a separate purchase.
A spec sheet won't tell you that the rotary, a LightBurn licence, and proper air filtering are not in the box. That's where the budget starts to move.
Check 2: What 'xTool S1 engrave glass' really means
Can the xTool S1 engrave glass? Yes. But the honest answer has a condition: you need to help the laser.
People see 'engraves glass' and assume you put a clear glass inside and press Start. The reality is that a blue-diode beam passes through most transparent materials. No absorption means no mark. The workaround is to cover the area with a thin opaque layer — tempera paint, a washable marker coat, or a wet paper towel. The laser burns that coating and carries the heat to the glass surface. After you clean the residue, you get a frosted mark.
This is not a flaw in the S1. It is the physics of diode lasers on transparent material. A CO₂ machine is simpler for clear glass because the glass absorbs 10.6 µm directly. But that is only one page of the comparison. A CO₂ setup also brings water cooling, a bigger footprint, and tube maintenance that a desktop diode machine doesn't have.

People assume air assist is there to help the laser cut faster. Actually, for engraving, its main job is to keep the workpiece cool and clean. The causation runs the other way: skip the air and you'll see the problem in the scrap bin, not on the speed dial.
Here's what to ask on any laser quote. On a CO₂ machine, air assist usually means an external air pump sitting next to the unit. Is that pump included in the advertised price? Is it oil-free? Does it deliver clean, dry air? I've seen too many 'low price' laser deals that quietly leave the pump, the chiller, or the exhaust as extras. On the S1, air assist is integrated, so there's one less accessory to buy and one less thing to set up. It's not a workshop compressor, but it's sized correctly for a 40 W desktop machine.
Check 4: Put the rotary in the cart before you compare prices
A glass tumbler is round. If you want to engrave a logo on a curved surface without distortion, you need the piece to rotate under the laser so the focal point stays consistent. That's what the RA2 Pro rotary does.
Most buyers compare the base S1 price against other base prices, then discover later that the rotary is an additional purchase. On a glass-heavy order, the rotary isn't an upsell. It's the difference between doing the job and turning the job away.
If your work is flat glass plaques, skip the rotary. If your work is personalised tumblers, wine glasses, or bottles, include it in the very first quote you build.
Check 5: The real cost of a laser engraving machine in Australia
Someone always asks me: how much is a laser engraving machine? The useful answer isn't a sticker price — it's the delivered, ready-to-run cost.
I've learned to ask 'what's not included?' before I ask 'what's the price?' The vendor who lists all costs upfront may look more expensive. The vendor who hides them until checkout is the one who actually costs more. That rule applies to laser companies, accessory sellers, and everyone in between.
When I priced the S1 on the official xTool AU site in mid-January 2025, the machine itself was roughly A$1,800 to A$2,200 depending on the current promotion. That's the starting line, not the finish line.
- Rotary (RA2 Pro): budget around A$550 to A$700 if you want to do tumblers and bottles properly.
- Air assist: built into the S1. On a CO₂ quote, ask separately — an external air pump is often an extra cost.
- Shipping and handling: A$150 to A$350 depending on your state and whether the unit is in an Australian warehouse. Express freight before a deadline costs even more.
- Software: XCS is free. A LightBurn licence is a separate purchase and is not included in the machine price.
- Filtration or extraction: if you can't vent outside, budget A$300 to A$800 for a suitable filter unit. Don't skip this because laser work smells and produces fine dust.
- Glass consumables for testing: coating, masking, test pieces, and cleaning supplies. Plan A$150 to A$250 before your first paid job.
Do the math: an S1 configured to engrave glass tumblers comes to roughly A$2,800 to A$3,400 once it lands in your workshop and is ready to run. That's not the answer everyone wants, but it's better than discovering the extras at checkout.
Check 6: Run a timed rehearsal before you promise anything
Most people do a test engraving and think they're done. The step most buyers skip is a full timed rehearsal of an actual job.
After the S1 is set up, engrave three identical tumblers under the clock. Prepare the file, apply the coating, mount the piece, align the design, run the job, wash it, dry it, and inspect it against the client proof. If the process isn't repeatable — if each tumbler takes a different amount of time or the alignment drifts — you don't yet know enough to quote a rush order.
When I'm triaging a rush order, the first question isn't what the machine can do. It's 'have we done this exact job before on this exact material?' If the answer is no, then it's not a rush order. It's an experiment. We try not to run experiments against client deadlines.
Check 7: Confirm who answers the phone at 4:45 on a Friday
Finally, before you buy a laser cutter in Australia, check who supports it locally.
The Australian Consumer Law gives you protections, but those protections are against the retailer you bought from. That works well when the retailer is authorised and contactable. It works less well when you've bought a grey import from a marketplace seller and the machine develops a fault three months later.
Ask three questions before you pay: Is this an authorised Australian supplier? Are spare modules and parts stocked locally? And what happens if the unit arrives damaged or dead on arrival? A lower price from an unauthorised importer stops looking cheap the first time nobody picks up the phone.
